Molasses-On-Snow Candy from Little House on the Prairie

We went back in time today and read about how kitchens and cooking have changed over the years. We got a recipe from the Little House on the Prairie Cookbook and made homemade candy. We boiled molassis and brown sugar and drizzled it over snow. It immediately hardened and turned into a taffy like substance. The kids were not thrilled about the taste of the molassis but we did the same thing with maple syrup and the kids liked that a lot better. The molassis was bitter but it was neat for them to realize that back in the day of Laura Engalls Wilder this was a huge treat!

The girls tasting the yummy maple syrup candy.

Adrienne's molassis. It looked like a spider web.

Liz checking her's out.

Silly Emma! Her snow melted because she was the last one to pour the molassis on.

Sarah is taking this seriously!

Adrienne and Liz "the little house girls"!

Colin was the only boy (besides William) but he still enjoyed this hands-on project.

Rebecca stirring the maple syrup.

Adrienne getting her snow ready.

Emma prepping her snow.

Colin is proud of his hand-picked snow.

The girls are filling their pans and getting ready to do some old fashioned candy making!

Colin is scooping snow into his pan.

This was a great time! Thank you for helping to put this project together Cathy. It was the perfect thing to do with all the snow on the ground on this cold winter day. Can't wait to pick our next Little House recipe!
